After losing to Westlake Boys High in their first pool match on Monday, the Rathkeale College, XI Hockey team dug deep in their second game to come from behind and eventually beat Hastings’ Boys High 3-2 in their second pool match on Tuesday.
Playing his 100th game for the College, a swiftly taken penalty corner direct shot from Sam Kyle secured the lead and after a further six minutes of even contest, the win was secured.
Gaining a top two pool placing was going to need another win. Playing Sacred Heart College (Auckland) saw the team 2-0 up early in the second half. However, Sacred Heart came back to draw the game and the game was in the balance. Four minutes from the end of play Henry Phelps slotted home the winner both securing the win and second position in the pool.
The other pool match result emerged as expected and confirmed Rathkeale’s elevation to the top tier tournament in the country.
This is the best standing a Rathkeale team has ever had in its history and the onus is now on the boys to justify their placing. Today, they play one of the tournament favourites, Palmerston North Boys High School for a position in the quarter finals of this prestigious secondary schools’ tournament.

All year 10, 11 and 12 students and their parents are invited to attend the above event on Friday 21st August at Rathkeale College.
The aim of the evening is to provide information about the subjects that will be offered at Rathkeale College/Senior College in 2016. Subject displays will be set up, and Heads of Departments will be present to answer questions. There will be careers information on display, and personnel from some tertiary institutions will also be present.
Members of senior management and the careers advisor will also be available to answer questions.
Rathkeale is currently seeking feedback from parents about our marketing and communications activities.
