A range of scholarships and financial assistance are available for students who apply to attend Rathkeale College.

Please note:  all require an application, due by Friday 1 November 2024.

ACCESS BARRIER BOARDING ALLOWANCE ($3,200 PER ANNUM)

A student is eligible if they live too far away from an appropriate school and the Ministry’s school transport assistance programme does not provide a solution.

“Too far away” is defined as living an unreasonable distance from the nearest appropriate school (eg more than 60km) and:

  • the closest school transport service to get to their nearest school is unreasonable (eg 20km), or
  • they have to travel longer than 60 minutes one way to their nearest school each day, or
  • they have to drive an unreasonable distance (eg 60km) to the nearest school.

MULTIPLE BARRIERS ALLOWANCE ($8,500 PER ANNUM)

Please contact the Principal of Rathkeale College before applying for this allowance.

A student is eligible for this allowance if they are experiencing more than one of the following:

  • Poor participation at school – difficulty engaging in everyday classroom learning, completing school work, keeping up adequate attendance and engaging in extra-curricular activities
  • Poor relationships – socially isolated or lacks respect for others
  • Behavioural issues – disruptive, harms others or themselves, participates in criminal activities, or has a history of stand-downs, suspensions or expulsions
  • Low educational achievement – shows significantly lower attainments (lower than same age peers) in literacy, numeracy, oral language and other subjects
  • Environment – lacks family and community support, has poor or negative role models, is exposed to physical or psychological harm, or multiple community or government agencies (e.g. Police, Child Youth and Family, a health or mental health service) are involved with the young person.

 

Scholarships administered by the Māori Education Trust are available throughout all secondary school years.  These scholarships include the:

  • Māori Education Trust Boarding Scholarship for Year 9 – Year 13 Māori students with demonstrated financial need and enrolled at a secondary boarding school

  • Māori Education Trust Year 9 Scholarship for Year 9 Māori students with demonstrated financial need, who require assistance with education costs

  • Māori Education Trust Year 12 & 13 for Year 12 and 13 Māori students with demonstrated financial need, who require assistance with education costs.

  1. SECONDARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

The scholarships are available to students studying full-time at secondary schools in Years 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

The amount of the scholarship is dependent on the pool of funds available and the number of applications received.

The applications must reach the Trusts office by the closing date.  Due to the volume of applications late applications may not be considered.

The scholarships recipients will be announced by letter to the applicant in December and to the school in January.

  1. LEADERSHIP AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarships are available annually, With a total pool of $8000 for secondary school students in Years 11, 12 and 13.

Applications are available from 1 February and close 31 March annually.

The scholarships are announced to the applicant and to the school annually in April.

The Mihingare (Anglican) Secondary School Scholarships are for Maori secondary school students who demonstrate financial need, leadership qualities/potential and a satisfactory educational background, and who will benefit from additional financial support for their secondary schooling. Each year, a maximum of 30 scholarships worth up to $10,000 each are offered.

The objective of the Yamada O’Regan Secondary School Scholarships is to advance Ngāi Tahu secondary school students to complete the school year and successfully attain a secondary school qualification.

Scholarship Eligibility

To be eligible for a Yamada O’Regan Secondary School Scholarship you must:

  • Be a registered Ngāi Tahu member
  • Be enrolled at a secondary school studying in years 10, 11, 12 or 13
  • Be achieving academic success in at least three school subjects
  • Be involved in whānau, hapū or iwi-related activities
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities
  • Be able to explain the difficulties/hardships that may prevent you from completing your current school year and or successful attainment of a secondary school qualification.
