Martin O’Grady – Principal
Martin started as Principal of Rathkeale College in 2018. He has been a Principal now for 13 years having previously been Principal of Feilding High School and Karamu High School in Hastings. He began his teaching career at Hastings Boys’ High School before moving on to Lindisfarne College where he held a range of positions in both the boarding and day school before becoming Assistant Principal. He holds a degree in Agriculture and a diploma in teaching. In 2010 he completed a post graduate diploma in educational administration and leadership. Martin is passionate about boys achieving to their potential and believes that Rathkeale has the ideal setting, programmes and people to achieve this. His experience in both boys and co-educational high schools makes him ideally suited to both Rathkeale and Senior college. He has played and coached a range of sports in his career and has a deep appreciation of the performing arts. A Justice of the Peace for the last five years underlines Martin’s commitment to serving the community.
Mason Summerfield– Deputy Principal – Director of Teaching & Learning
Mason was appointed to this position at the start of 2016 from Lindisfarne College where he was Head of the Science Faculty, a Boarding Housemaster and held other management roles. Prior to Lindisfarne, Mason taught at Central Hawkes Bay College and Massey High School. His teaching expertise is in the sciences particularly Biology and Agricultural Science; he holds a BSC from Lincoln University and a Diploma in Teaching from the Christchurch College of Education. Mason was the National Examiner in Agriculture and Horticulture for nine years, a lead teacher in the development of assessments and resources for NCEA, and the President of that subject’s national teacher association for four years. Mason has coached sports teams including 1st XI football and cricket teams in his previous schools and continues to enjoy being involved with sport at Rathkeale. In 2014 Mason attended the International Boys’ School Coalition (IBSC) annual conference in Capetown and the following year presented an Action Research paper in Vancouver on empathy and global connectivity.
Adam Gordon – Deputy Principal – Head of Senior College
Adam was appointed to this position at the start of 2017, he was previously Head of Music and Dean of Year 12 at Rathkeale College. His teaching background is in Music. He has an MA from Oxford University and PGCE from King Alfred’s College, Winchester. He is also an Associate of the Royal College of Organists. Adam came to Rathkeale from the British International School, Jakarta, where he was Head of Performing Arts for nine years and inaugural Chair of the Music Teachers’ Assn of the Federation of British International Schools of South and East Asia. Prior to that he was Head of Music in schools in the UK and NZ including Scots College and Wanganui Collegiate, where he was also a Boarding Housemaster. Adam still enjoys his involvement in the musical life of Rathkeale, in particular whole school singing.
