Rathkeale College - Gifted and Talented Education

It is mandatory for all state and state-integrated schools to demonstrate how they are meeting the needs of their gifted and talented learners.

Rathkeale encourages all students to work as individuals and as groups to their full potential and strive for excellence, to become life-long learners and good citizens.
Rathkeale provides opportunities for parents, caregivers, and whānau to be involved in the decision making that affects the learning of individual students and will be invited to assist with the education of gifted students.
Programmes for gifted and talented learners are based on sound practice, take account of the research and literature in this field, and are regularly evaluated. Gifted students are provided with opportunities to realize their potential through special grouping, enrichment and extension programmes and through acceleration where appropriate.
Gifted and talented learners can be offered a differentiated curriculum that has been expanded in breadth, depth, and pace to match their learning needs.
Provision for gifted and talented learners is supported by ongoing high-quality teacher education. Teachers are offered opportunities to expand their strategies for working with gifted students and gifted students are given access to appropriate support personnel.
Gifted students are encouraged to understand the nature of their giftedness and to be involved in their learning and progress.
Māori perspectives and values are embodied in all aspects of definition, identification, and provision for  gifted and talented students.
Gifted and talented students are those with demonstrated superior ability in one or more areas and needing education or services beyond those provided by the regular classroom. They will have a combination of Creativity, Task Commitment and Above Average Intelligence (Prof J. Renzulli 2005)
